Preschooler's Lunch Inspected and Taken Away by School

I am not sure why I continue to be surprised by the insanity reported in the news.  Moreover why I am surprised by the lengths the state through the public school system will go to undermine parental rights.  Yet, I stand in shock that a preschooler's lunch was inspected and taken away by a state worker.  That is why I pay taxes...so little children can have their lunches taken away by state workers.

In the news yesterday, was a story that should not have surprised but alas I was anyway. Fox News reported that a preschool girl was not allowed to eat the lunch her mother packed for her because the contents did not meet “”U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines.”” The student was provided a lunch of chicken nuggets provided by the school cafeteria to provide the nutrition she needed to live. In what world can chicken nuggets provided by a school lunchroom be considered edible much less healthy? You may be thinking that her mother surely packed her a lunch of wood chips and pixie sticks to merit such an action.

The student’s lunch consisted of:
  • turkey and cheese sandwich
  • banana
  • apple juice
  • potato chips
Moreover, the student was sent home with a letter and a bill charging the parents for the chicken nuggets. The letter stated that parents who did not pack a healthy lunch would force the school to supplement and parents would be charged. What? You mean the schools are not taking the time to inspect children’s lunches? Yes. Yes, they are. That is your tax dollars at work. Since your tax dollars were not enough to pay the state workers who inspect the lunches, they need to find ways to say a banana is unhealthy so they can nickel and dime parents to supplement with healthier options. Healthier options such as chicken nuggets.

As you can obviously tell this news is appalling to me. I am tired of the school systems playing parent. This is the first step in a school system claiming they know better than the parent and will take action. Sure, it is only chicken nuggets today, but if we continue to hand over our rights neatly tied in a bow, it will not end here.

By the way, I don't care what the student's had in her lunch.  Short of illegal substances, her lunch should not have been inspected and replaced.  If I was the parent, I would not pay the $1.25 for the nuggets.  The school should pay the parent for a lunch that was not eaten.

See everyday its even more ridiculous than the last. This is another reason why my children will never go to a public school. The school had no right to do that.

I read this story earlier today and cannot believe it! I would have been livid! What is even in a chicken nugget? I've seen those shows about how they are made...gross! So glad I homeschool!!

my hubby showed this to me last night. it is complete insanity. and I agree--short of illegal substances, parents have the responsibility to provide whatever they want in the lunch. even pay for a school lunch if they desire. but not be FORCED. crazy. simply crazy. that lunch her mom sent sounds very similar to lunches I send with my girlie. [i even send cookies--GASP] :)

I believe the parents of that school should demand the firing of that state worker to set precedence for other state workers and the government schools. How else do we take this country back? What insanity!

We homeschool due to the craziness at the government schools. Parents need to wake up and take responsibility for their children before the state workers do it for them.

This really riles me up as you can tell, it is a subject that I'm very passionate about. These children in the government schools are the future of our nation. Do we really want the government dictating the future of this nation? They've done such a wonderful bang up job so far....

It is time to take control of our children's futures by guarding their hearts and minds. Teaching them everything that is right and to be Godly citizens with integrity.

@Sharon...you pretty much said what I said to my husband and children last night as they all had to cover their ears...LOL. I get crazy about things like this.

I am truly livid about this - I've tried rewriting my comment on here over and over and then rereading it and deleting it because I am SOOO upset about this situation. Fortunately it is in the news and this is not an everyday occurrence - I hope!

I would be livid if it were my child! I wouldn't pay for the lunch. I can't even imagine....my children are MINE and they will eat what I want them to eat!! chicken nuggets indeed! I NEVER allow my children to eat chicken nuggets!! {Unless they're homemade ones.}

This is insanity. We have religious dietary restrictions- I would have a fit (and quite possibly the school would have a lawsuit) if someone gave my child non-halal meat to eat. I can see it mom sent a soda and soda is on the banned list at school, but come on! Thankfully, this is one stupidity we will never have to face. Hurray for homeschooling!

I read through both articles...and I still don't get how they can say their lunches are better?? Sorry but that's what bothers me. When my kids went to school I always packed their lunch with 100% whole wheat breads and 100% juice {my kids are allergic to milk & lactose intolerant so no milk}. The can count corn as a veggie and fish sticks and chicken nuggets as a meat but not potato chips as a veggie, banana as a fruit, and turkey as a meat. I just don't get the USDA regulations on food at all!!!! Craziness! So glad I now home educate!!

Oh GGGGRRRRR!!! I read about this too! Absolutely ridiculous on so many levels! And yes, even if the lunch her mom sent wasn't nutricious, what *right* does the state have to replace the child's lunch? What was surprising to me also, was in the article I read the mom wasn't even upset or seemed to find anything strange about this?!
